sent by our friend elizabeth. thanks for catching this article in our local paper about daniel lanois'show at pappy & harriets:

"I found the place to be fantastic and spiritual. There is evidence of
tranquility that you never hear in the city," said Lanois in a pre-sound check
interview. "That sense of mortality is visible. It's good to be
reminded we will not be here forever."

A photo of the late Fred Drake was posted on the wall behind the stage,
signalling a reverential or spiritual quality to the gathering, while
perpetuating his legacy. Several years ago Lanois spent about six months at the
Drake's Joshua Tree recording studio, Rancho de la Luna.

Lanois also referred to the mystique of the Mojave, the "little bit of
Joshua Tree mythology" permeating the music world, and a growing interest of
recording artists to tap into it.

excerpt from a letter to dani in barcelona...

lately, we've started the 2nd record by local songwriter shawn mafia, who has a bit of the tom waits carnival barker/snake oil-salesman thing going on, with street-poetic lyrics and twisted arrangements played by a top-notch, rootsy band. also, nick oliveri's little brother's band, woodshed, just did a few days. twiggy ramirez (jeordie white) & chris goss also did some work in the past couple of weeks.

this week, an austin band, el orbits, is coming in.

newly-local angels brant bjork & denise & duna records just moved in to the neighborhood, up behind the rancho. it's great to have them as neighbors!! yeah, brant's tony mason co-produced 'local angel,' recorded at the rancho, is excellent. brant is on the road touring and promoting the album (available on black vinyl or cd!)

bobby mason, tony's dad, is due to his release his rancho recorded album of rhythm and blues classics sung and played with old-style gravel, spit and loads of soul.

meanwhile, i'm doing my weekly (peacenik) radio show at the beatnik (www.beatnikradio.com). i had a great new joshua tree band called gram rabbit on last week as a pre-release party for their album, 'music to start a cult to' (on stinky records.) they're already getting airplay on kcrw, the trend-setting station in santa monica...(but i had 'em on first!!)

twiggy, goss & catching did a great impromptu jam on beatnik radio a couple of weeks ago.

i've also got a new album in the can, as does tony mason. still looking forward to the david catching album!!

speaking of dave, he's getting ready for a show with the earthlings? and molly & jared's band, the spores, september 11 at pappy & harriets in pioneertown.(www.pappyandharriets.com)

elia arce is preparing for her performance of 'the fifth commandment' for the yerba buena center for the arts in san francisco in november.

and 'the sky party', an album of fred drake's gorgeous, intense and
healing ambient music is in production for a fall release.

it's starting to feel like autumn is coming. unbelievable sunsets, that sweet breeze and sparkling, starry nights.

tq

burning inipi

tonight adriene, elia, fred burke, don, robbie, tawnja (with belle & bodhi) and ted disassembled & burned joanne's sweat lodge. joanne & clint had led the sweat at their house for the past several years before moving recently.

(ted: i started going when i met don and i was quitting smoking. fred drake and the rest of us started attending bi-weekly sweats for most of the next three years. i had been to two or three sweats when my friend dave committed suicide and i discovered his body. the songs, prayers and pouring sweat inside that place helped me get throught that time, which was just the beginning of a long period of many losses including brenda (who sweat with us just one time), gregg, hazel, kyoti, sabu and of course, fred, who attended his last sweat just a week or so before he died.)

the lava rocks were returned to the area in pipes canyon where they had come from. the willow saplings, used as the frame, were then taken out to adriene's hobe chobe (on this, her 40th birthday) and a bonfire was made. the members of the inipi sang lodge songs while the flames carried their prayers, and those of all who had sweat together, into a sky cracking with distant lightning.
