This morning, Kashmir could not get up for his breakfast. He very peacefully retired his body, and released his spirit into the hands of his Maker. He was 32 years old.
I'm thankful for Fred Drake, his family, and dearest friends, who have since become my family -- all met through the giving life force of Kashmir, the Royal Arabian and King of the Wind.
Kashmir, with a heart of fire, submitted his will to his soulmate Fred and became his companion and comforter for ten years. In my mind, they were at first an unlikely combination: Fred, whom I had just met and prejudged to be a wannabe LA rockstar geek, and Kashmir, a mannerless, untrained, rack of bones. Never in my wildest dreams could I have imagined the bonds of love that brought healing, restoration, enlightenment, and salvation to all who experienced Fred and Kashmir's relationship.
Kashmir became one of the most beautiful, spirited horses I have ever met (and I've met quite a few!) with what we in the horse world call "a kind eye." Fred became my brother.
My life has been forever changed for the better. I know that all who knew him will mourn with us, but my hope is that you will also rejoice with us in knowing that Kashmir and Fred are once again riding together to that furthest star. Fred would always say to me, "Let's go!" when it was time to ride.
In His Strong Love, Karen Callahan
